The Good Ol’ Days

Posted on

Back in the old days, when we lived in an information poor environment, people were still pretty amazing at recognizing patterns. But these patterns were built on limited data points, as most people only had their own personal experiences to pull from. As a result, many stories and superstitions developed to warn of potential dangers and to transmit the values that people thought would make their tribe successful. These stories and superstitions eroded over time as societies developed the tools to probe reality directly via the scientific method.

The deeply dogmatic, who refused to refine and assimilate their stories, superstitions and actions, have for the most part, been naturally selected out of existence. There still remain tribes in various untouched jungles around the globe who live in the old way. But these tribes are alive only because of the protection and mercy of the modernized world. They are not competitive and can be eradicated swiftly if need be.

Technological progress and modernization are not choices, they are a necessity to remain competitive in a complex and constantly evolving world. There is a game theoretic drive to preempt your adversary who is simultaneously trying to preempt you as well. This is a natural law which leads to a natural progression which can’t be stopped or subverted.

Those who cling to the good old days will soon find themselves in a position of obsolescence.
